Csontváry – In the Language of Photons

Immersive Media Art Production at CODE Veszprém

Exhibition Summary: “Csontváry – In the Language of Photons” is a large-scale immersive exhibition that reinterprets the visionary oeuvre of the Hungarian master Tivadar Csontváry Kosztka through the lens of contemporary digital media. Hosted at the Center of Digital Experiences (CODE) in Veszprém, the production utilizes a 360-degree projection environment to translate Csontváry’s unique “sun-path” (napút) color theory and monumental compositions into a dynamic, light-based narrative. The exhibition bridges early 20th-century mythic expressionism with 21st-century digital scenography, creating a transcendental space where the material density of the original canvases is transformed into a flux of photons.

The Narrative Arc: The production follows a meticulous spatial dramaturgy, guiding visitors through Mediterranean landscapes and mythic vistas, eventually culminating in a profound digital meditation on the artist’s most iconic symbols. The finale of the production focuses on the symbolic and spiritual weight of The Lonely Cedar and Pilgrimage to the Cedars. In this climactic sequence, the paintings are deconstructed and reimagined through generative visual layers, exploring the tension between organic permanence and digital abstraction. This concluding chapter serves as the exhibition’s emotional and philosophical peak, where the Cedar remains the central totem of artistic persistence and cosmic order.
